Last Saturday, I had my annual holiday girls’ day. In past years we have either baked and made all sorts of crazy confections, or made holiday cards. This year I went nuts and decided to do both. I thought I might regret it, but the invites had already gone out and the r.s.v.p.s were rolling in. I was surrounded by family this year. My mom was here from out of state (which made the day extra special), Steve’s mom also was in attendance (they made a great team), and my sister-in-law whose friendship I cherish.
Mom and I woke up and had a nice breakfast. The guests weren’t supposed to arrive until 1pm so there didn’t seem to be a rush…until time kept ticking and there was always so much more to do to prepare. Mom spent lots of time preparing food (including her famous deviled eggs which got rave reviews, as usual), and I was trying to prepare the house and get out all the crafty, card-making items and ingredients for baking. I was very grateful that Brooke would be here a little early. She had phoned to let me know she was on her way and I was looking forward to her presence.
After finishing her Chipotle tres tacos (a staple in Brooke’s diet), we were off and running. This year I had decided to invite the children of my girlfriends for the first time. We’ve had teenagers before, but this was the under 10 crowd and I knew we would have to keep them busy from start to finish. I did think it would be a memory-making day for mom and kids so it would be worth the extra effort. Brooke immediately began making dough for cutout cookies so the kids could cut out their shapes for decorating later.
The group begins to gather:
Shortly after, the crowd started arriving. Kids started cutting out cookies, with Brooke’s help, and the adults starting grouping in twos and threes to whip up new recipes. Christy and Aiden, the dynamic duo, arrived and knew the drill-pick an apron, pick a recipe, and go for it. Between the two of them one or both of them was responsible for half the baked goods and a handful of very well-designed cards. Taylor was timely this year and came with delicious Mimosas-her annual contribution. I had turned up the Christmas music a couple times by now so we could hear it, but I was told that it stopped so I went to restart the trusty Nano. Huh, it’s still playing. I guess we were getting a little loud, so I turned it up…again.

All smiles:
The kids cut out and decorated cookies, dipped and decorated giant pretzels, and made snowflake ornaments while the big girls managed to get through six recipes. All the while Brooke managed the oven and helped keep up with the dishes. She didn’t let even one thing burn and there was stuff in and out of there and at different temperatures for three or four hours straight. Logan hung around long enough to beg for, and get, a glob of cookie dough to eat before hitting the gym. Taylor, Laura, and Sunshine all showed talent by managing to make cookies with the adults and decorate with the kids. Sunshine did it with her youngest strapped to her back. And although Sarah had to come late due to work, she managed to whip up two recipes.
While the crew made cards-and there were some very creative ones-we divided up all the baking from the day so everybody could take home a sampling of each. All the kids took their own creations home, but sweet, little Jerome gave his cookies to Logan and made a special card for him as well. Aaah. Danielle, who spent the majority of her time helping at the kids' table, was hoping her daughter would sleep on the drive home. This thought turned out to be quite delusional due to the sugar intake. Apparently Natalie enjoyed squirting the icing straight from the tube into her mouth, so she had a lot to say all the way up the hill.

Look what I did:
The event eventually started winding down and most were gone by 6. Steve’s mom decided to wait until he arrived home from work so she could spend a little time with him as well, and BFF was camping out on the couch so we could rock the one cog the next day. It didn’t take much time to realize the Christmas tunes were quite loud without everybody here. Steve was, and still is, quite amazed at how loud we must have been to have the volume up so high and not seem overwhelmed by it. We all had pizza and then Steve worked on my bike as well as Brooke’s while we talked his ear off with stories of the day.
The next day Brooke and I had our pre-ride oatmeal breakfast and she was off to run an errand. We met at the McDowells. I thought Pemberton would be a perfect place for Brooke to get used to her new single speed (not that she needs it-she already rocks it). The clouds were gorgeous but threatening in the distance. They were all different shades of brooding blues. As we started our ride I noticed a rainbow in the distance. There was a slight headwind, but we kept plugging away.
Possibly stolen scenic shot:
The ride was mostly un-noteworthy. We saw some wild horses and a husband who didn’t seem to be high on his wife’s list of favorites as she walked up one of the hills. Another couple who seemed to be enjoying their ride took our picture as proof we were there. They asked us where we were from as they snapped the shot and it seemed a little silly to reply, “Here.”
Definitely stolen girls pic (Micki needs to bring the camera):
We weren’t back to the car for five minutes when the rain hit. It gave us just enough time to get our bikes loaded and our clothes changed. We knew it wouldn’t rain while we were out there because we lugged our rain jackets in our packs. That’s just how it works.
I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel to have such a great group of girls to call my friends. They are the best.
I could not finish without mentioning how well mannered all the children were for the duration of the day. It was quite impressive. One of the daughters was of college age and I thought it was really nice that she decided to spend her day with us as well.
Thanks Brooke, Cindy, Sunshine, Summer, Roxy, Coral, Taylor, Christy, Aiden, Laura, Jerome (yep, we had a boy too), Danielle, Natalie, Sarah, and Brenda. And a huge thanks to my mom for starting this tradition with my brother, sister, and me. I hope everyone here will remember these days for years to come.
